The Throwing Art
What Judo is and how we train it.
Judo is the throwing art. You learn to take a grip, break a bigger opponent's balance and put them on the ground, then land on top and stay in control. Timing and leverage do the work, which is why a smaller person can throw a larger one, and why every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu roll goes better when it starts with your takedown.
At KDL Combatives, Judo is part of our one adult program in Valparaiso, taught alongside BJJ and self-defense by black belt instructors. You learn to fall safely before anyone throws you, then drill the day's throw with a partner who looks after you. Men and women, no experience needed. Your first Judo class is free. Wondering whether to start with Judo or BJJ? We teach both in one class, and the drive from your town is shorter than you think.

Judo Questions
Before your first Judo class.
What should I wear to a Judo class?
Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in. If you already own a gi, bring it. If you don't, come anyway. Your first class is free and nobody expects you to show up kitted out.
What happens at my first Judo class?
Tell us it's your first time. You'll warm up, learn how to fall safely before anyone throws you, then drill the day's throw or takedown with a partner who looks after you. Judo is part of our one adult program, so you can come to any class on the schedule.
Do I need experience to start Judo?
No. Most people at KDL started at zero. Beginners train in the same room as experienced students, and the people ahead of you set the pace.
Is Judo safe? How physical is it?
Judo is a contact sport, so you'll work hard, but throws are drilled with control and you learn to fall before you learn to throw. You decide how hard you go, especially early on, and you can sit a rep out any time.
