The Ground Game

What Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is and how we train it.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is grappling on the ground: position, leverage and control instead of size and strength. You learn to close the distance, take the fight down, hold a dominant position and finish with a choke or a joint lock. Done right, a smaller person can control a much bigger one, which is why BJJ is the base of modern self-defense.

At KDL Combatives, every BJJ class in Valparaiso is taught by black belts so an everyday adult can actually use it. Technique first, then live rounds against a partner who is really resisting. Beginners train in the same room as experienced students, men and women, any starting point. Your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is free. New to it? BJJ Questions

Before your first jiu-jitsu class.

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in. If you already own a gi, bring it. If you don't, come anyway. Your first class is free and nobody expects you to show up kitted out.

What happens at my first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class?

Tell us it's your first time. You'll warm up, learn the day's technique, and drill it with a partner who looks after you, at your own pace. Come to any class on the schedule; BJJ is part of our one adult program.

Do I need experience to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

No. Most people at KDL started at zero. Beginners train in the same room as experienced students, and the people ahead of you set the pace and keep you safe.

Is BJJ safe? How physical is it?

It's a contact sport, so you'll work hard and sweat, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is built on control, not strikes. Technique is drilled before anything goes live, you tap early and often, and you decide how hard you go.
