The technique portion of an evening class at 786 McCool Rd
·KDL Combatives, Valparaiso
Before you arrive
Wear athletic clothes you can move and sweat in: a T-shirt without pockets or zippers, shorts or leggings without pockets, and nothing metal. Bring water. Trim your nails, because your training partners will thank you. You do not need a gi for a first class at KDL Combatives, and you do not need to have watched a single video.
Aim to walk in ten minutes early. Tell whoever meets you that it is your first time. That one sentence changes the whole hour: the instructor pairs you with someone patient, and nobody expects you to know anything.
The warm-up
Classes open with movement that looks strange from the outside: shrimping across the mat, rolling over a shoulder, bridging your hips off the floor. These are the building blocks of every escape you will ever learn. Do them slowly. Nobody is watching your form on day one, and being out of breath in the warm-up is normal for everyone who ever started.
The technique
The instructor shows one position or one move, usually a few times from different angles, and explains what problem it solves. Then you drill it with a partner, taking turns. This is where you spend most of the class. Ask questions. Get it wrong. Get it slightly less wrong. That is the entire method, and it works because you repeat it every week.
At KDL the technique might be a Judo throw, a guard pass on the ground, or a self-defense drill against a grab. All three live in the same program, so a first-timer sees how they connect instead of learning them as separate hobbies.
Live rounds, and tapping
The last part of class is live training, sometimes called rolling: two people start from a position and try to work the techniques against real resistance. On your first day you may sit out, roll light with an experienced student, or just watch. Any of those is fine.
If you do roll, learn one thing above all else: the tap. Two clear taps on your partner, the mat, or a spoken "tap" means stop, and everyone stops instantly. Tap early. Tapping is not losing. It is how you get to train tomorrow.
After class
You will be tired in muscles you did not know you had. You will probably feel a bit lost, and you will also probably feel better than you have in a while. Both are normal. Sleep, drink water, and come back within the week while the feeling is fresh. Everyone on the mat had a first class, and the only difference between them and you is that they came back.
At KDL Combatives your first class is free. Pick a time on the schedule, book it or just show up, and take the hardest step, which is the door.
