How to choose a BJJ gym in Northwest Indiana

There are more gyms in the region than there used to be. Here is how to tell them apart without a black belt's eye.

Ask who is teaching, and what rank

Belt rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is earned slowly and it means something. Ask plainly who teaches the class you would attend and what belt they hold. A serious gym answers without hesitation. If the answer is vague, or the highest rank in the building only teaches a private-lesson tier you have to pay extra for, notice that.

At KDL Combatives every class is taught by a black belt. That is the standard we think you should hold any gym to, ours included.

Take a trial class, then watch the beginners

A website tells you what a gym wants to be. A trial class tells you what it is. While you are there, ignore the highlight-reel athletes and watch how the newest people are treated. Who is paired with them? Does anyone check on them during live rounds? Do they look scared or do they look tired and happy?

Also confirm there is live training at all. Some places drill technique for an hour and never test it against resistance. That is fitness, not jiu-jitsu.

  • Does the instructor know the beginners by name?
  • Are people tapping early and resetting calmly?
  • Is the mat clean and does the room smell like a clean gym?
  • Did anyone pressure you to sign anything on the way out?

Ask about money before you fall in love

Every gym prices differently: monthly, contracts, family rates, drop-ins. Ask directly what it costs, what happens if you need to pause, and whether the trial is really free. Then decide with the number in front of you, not after three weeks when you are hooked. At KDL your first class is free and Keith will tell you the rest in person, on the mat, with no paperwork in your hand.

Be honest about the drive

The best gym in the region is worthless if it is forty minutes the wrong way on a Tuesday night. Look at your real week, your real commute and the class times that survive both. Then find the gym whose schedule and location fit that, because the gym you attend beats the gym you admire.

If you are anywhere near Portage, Chesterton, Hobart or the west side of Valparaiso, KDL Combatives is about fifteen minutes away on McCool Road. If you are farther out, our town pages tell you the drive honestly. Either way, the first class is free, and it is the fastest way to answer every question on this list.
