Leverage Over Size

Why women train jiu-jitsu for self-defense, and how we teach it.

Most self-defense advice for women stops at awareness and a can of spray. Useful, and not enough, because the moment that matters is usually a grab, a shove, or being pinned by someone heavier. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the art built for exactly that moment: how to survive underneath a bigger person, get to a better position, and control or escape without needing to out-muscle anyone. Judo adds the standing part, staying on your feet or putting the other person off theirs.

At KDL Combatives in Valparaiso, women train this in our one adult program, taught by black belts and tested live against resisting partners at a pace you choose. There is no separate women's class and no choreography. You learn what actually works, next to people who started exactly where you are. Your first class is free. Honest Answers

What women ask before their first class.

Is there a women-only self-defense class?

Not right now. KDL Combatives runs one adult program, open to men and women, and self-defense is part of every class. Women train in the same room, with the same black belt instructors, as everyone else.

Will I have to train with men?

You will train with a mix of partners, which is the point: the person you may one day need to defend yourself from is probably bigger than you. Tell us it is your first class and you will be paired with someone experienced who trains with control. You always decide the pace, and you can always sit a round out.

Does jiu-jitsu really work for a smaller woman?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was built on the idea that leverage and position beat size and strength, and it is trained live, so you find out for yourself instead of taking our word for it. It will not make size irrelevant. It gives you real options when size is against you.

What should I wear and bring?

Leggings or shorts without pockets, a fitted T-shirt or rash guard, hair tied back, no jewelry, water. Nothing to buy for your free first class.
